Where walkers rest on Stage 12
A full-board planter's bungalow just off the Pekoe Trail, with hot baths, an open fire and Priya's cooking waiting at the end of the day.
Stage 12: Udaweriya to Haputale
One of the most exhilarating stages of the Pekoe Trail, through the remote "Hidden Valley" of Udaweriya, past Idalgashinna railway station and down to Haputale.
Haldummulla Estate sits just off the stage, below the high pass at Idalgashinna, so you can break this long day in two or walk sections of it from the door.
Stage facts from thepekoetrail.org. Always check the official Trail Watch updates before you set out; the stage can be affected by landslide warnings in heavy rain.

Highlights along the way
Idalgashinna Station
Built in 1893 on a ridge at 1,893 m, straddling the climatic divide, with views north towards Welimada and south to the Hambantota coastline.
Udaweriya Valley
A valley seemingly lost in time, with a derelict tea factory, goats and friendly villagers. On a clear day you might glimpse the ocean.
Adisham Bungalow
A worthwhile detour near Haputale: the 1931 Tudor and Jacobean-style house, now a monastery and museum.

We were looked after so well by Priya and her family, who cooked delicious meals (fabulous Sri Lankan curries for example, and Western dishes including outstanding pizza!)… When we could prise ourselves away from the sunny terrace and garden (where peacocks wander freely), we walked from the Bungalow and also did parts of the Pekoe Trail.
Lovely colonial-style bungalow, in a great location. The tea estate is fantastic, just wandering around and saying hello to the villagers was fun. Lots of walks to do nearby…
